How 3D and AR Technology Gives E-Commerce an Edge

·5 min read

E-commerce always faces the same core obstacle: customers can't touch the product. No matter how good the photos are, real size, texture, and fit get lost on screen — and that uncertainty is one of the biggest drivers of returns.

3D product viewing (a 360°-rotatable model) and augmented reality (AR — placing the product in your own space via phone camera) directly eliminate that uncertainty. A customer can place a piece of furniture in their own living room, or a lighting fixture in their own kitchen, and see it at real scale.

The result is concrete: industry reports repeatedly show notably higher conversion rates on AR-enabled product pages compared to standard ones, along with lower return rates. Because the customer has effectively "seen" it before buying.

The good news on the technical side: this is no longer only affordable for giant brands. Thanks to modern web technology (WebGL, Three.js), 3D/AR experiences can run directly in the browser — no app download required.

Of course it's not necessary for every product — for small, standard, low-risk purchases (a book, a t-shirt) photos are usually enough. But for products with high size/fit uncertainty (furniture, decor, lighting, some electronics), 3D/AR investment translates directly into sales.

If you'd like us to assess whether this kind of 3D/AR integration makes sense for your catalog, we're happy to give you a concrete recommendation.
